Information Regarding AirFanta’s Formaldehyde Killer Filters

This page contains important information about AirFanta’s Formaldehyde Killer filters. Please read the information below before purchasing the filters.

AirFanta’s Formaldehyde Killer filters contain a layer of special coating highly effective at removing formaldehyde. When formaldehyde comes into contact with this coating, the chemical compound (HCHO) is broken down into water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The filter may produce a “new car smell” (also described by some as a “sweet smell”) when this reaction occurs. The smell produced may be more noticeable when the room air purifier is running at higher speed settings, or when used in spaces with high humidity.

For this reason, we strongly encourage customers that are sensitive to such smells, or smells in general, to consider purchasing other types of filters, such as the High Efficiency + Activated Carbon filters, instead. The High Efficiency + Activated Carbon filters are also capable of removing formaldehyde, albeit less effectively than the Formaldehyde Killer filters.

We have included warning labels in our product images, product listings, and posts that feature Formaldehyde Killer filters. Examples can be seen below. Please be sure to consider the information on this page before purchasing Formaldehyde Killer filters.

FAQ

Most people describe the smell as a “new car smell” or “sweet smell”. While it doesn’t seem to affect most people, some people that are particularly sensitive to such smells or smells in general might find it unpleasant.
Yes, it goes away over time as there is a limit to the amount of formaldehyde that can be removed through the coating. The amount of time it takes to go away will depend on the amount of formaldehyde that is captured, as well as the speed setting of the room air purifier.
Yes, there are two ways.

1. Reduce the speed setting of the room air purifier. The smell is more noticeable at higher speed settings, especially at top speed.

2. Reduce the humidity in the indoor space. The smell could become more noticeable in spaces with high humidity, and is not as noticeable in spaces with low humidity.
