dokuki has released a free filter lifespan calculator for AirFanta room air purifiers, allowing you to calculate the estimated amount of time left for your filter lifespan.
In this blog post, we will share with you how this calculator works, and a few details about filter lifespans in general.
1. How are filter lifespans determined?

The lifespan of a filter is determined by three main factors.
The first factor is the amount of filtration material in the filter. The second factor is the speed setting of the filter. The third factor is the PM2.5 concentration in the room of the air purifier, after it is left running for at least two to three hours.
If you know all these three variables, you can calculate the estimated lifespan of a filter.
Sometimes, however, the filter lifespan could greatly increase or greatly reduce depending on environmental conditions, whether the doors/windows are opened or closed, and the speed setting of the air purifier. We illustrate this with four scenarios below (note – all scenarios assume that PM2.5 levels do not change throughout the year):
Scenario A – Average scenario in Singapore
- Model: AirFanta 5Pro
- Filter Type: High Efficiency
- Speed Setting: 55%
- Average PM2.5 Level: 5 µg/m³
- Operating schedule: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Estimated filter lifespan: 10.24 months
Comment: This scenario is in line with the 6 – 12 months estimated lifespan from the manufacturer.
Scenario B – 100% speed setting in a large preschool classroom
- Model: AirFanta 5Pro
- Filter Type: High Efficiency
- Speed Setting: 100%
- Average PM2.5 Level: 3.5 µg/m³
- Operating schedule: 12 hours a day, 5 days a week
Estimated filter lifespan: 2 years
Comment: The filter lifespan exceeds the 6 – 12 months estimated lifespan from the manufacturer, mainly because it is used only during business hours. This scenario also assumes that there are air purifiers running in the same classroom and in other rooms.
Scenario C – 25% speed setting in a bedroom with its door and window closed all the time
- Model: AirFanta 5Pro
- Filter Type: High Efficiency
- Speed Setting: 25%
- Average PM2.5 Level: 1 µg/m³
- Operating schedule: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Estimated filter lifespan: 12.9 years
Comment: The filter lifespan greatly exceeds the 6 – 12 months estimated lifespan from the manufacturer, mainly because it is being used in a small bedroom with its door and window closed all the time at a very low speed. This scenario also assumes that there are air purifiers running in other rooms.
Scenario D – 75% speed setting in bad haze conditions throughout the entire year, in a room with its door and window open
- Model: AirFanta 5Pro
- Filter Type: High Efficiency
- Speed Setting: 75%
- Average PM2.5 Level: 20 µg/m³
- Operating schedule: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Estimated filter lifespan: 1.81 months
Comment: The filter lifespan is greatly reduced compared to the the 6 – 12 months estimated lifespan from the manufacturer, mainly because of the haze that is entering the indoor space through the open doors and windows, as well as the high speed setting.
2. How to use the filter lifespan calculator

The filter lifespan calculator has several fields that you have to enter or select.
- Air Purifier – choose the air purifier and the type of filter that you are currently using
- Speed Setting – choose the speed setting that you are currently using
- Average PM2.5 Level – enter the PM2.5 concentration of the air purifier you are in
- Days Running per Week – enter the number of days your air purifier runs in one week
- Hours Running per Day – enter the numbers of hours your air purifier runs each day
For fields 1, 2, 4, and 5, please enter or select the values accordingly.
For field 3 (average PM2.5 level), the PM2.5 value can be measured the following way:
- Turn on your AirFanta room air purifier and leave it running at the usual speed ideally for at least two to three hours
- For AirFanta 5Pro or any type of AirFanta room air purifier that comes with an on-device AI PM2.5 Sensor, enter the PM2.5 value shown on the screen after two to three hours
- For AirFanta 3Pro, use a high accuracy air quality monitor (sold separately), such as an AirFanta G3 (coming soon), to measure the PM2.5 value in the room after two to three hours. When performing the measurement, ensure that the air quality monitor is positioned away from the air purifier (especially its air outlet), as measurements taken at the air outlet (the top part of the air purifier where the clean air exits) of the air purifier would not be as accurate
After entering the values, press the “Calculate Filter Lifespan” button and you will be shown the number of months or years you can use the filter for before having to replace them.
3. Caveats of the filter lifespan calculator

There are a few caveats you have to take note of when using this calculator.
- This calculator can only provide an estimate based on the amount of particulate matter (such as dust, pollen, smoke, viruses, bacteria, etc) that is captured by the filter over time. It does not take into account things that are captured by the Activated Carbon layer of a filter (if present), such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), formaldehyde, smells, and odors. Therefore, it is possible that the filter might have to be replaced earlier depending on the environmental conditions
- This calculator provides an estimate on the assumption that the PM2.5 level and other variables selected/entered remain consistent throughout the filter’s lifespan. Therefore, it is possible that the filter might have to be replaced earlier. When unsure, follow the filter lifespan estimates provided by AirFanta
- The estimates provided by the calculator, as well as the filter lifespan estimates provided by AirFanta and other manufacturers, are calculated based on how long it takes for the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of an air purifier to be reduced by half
Conclusion
We hope that you will be able to gain some new insights, purchase filter replacements on a regular basis, and make better air quality decisions based on the estimates provided by the filter lifespan calculator.
